This video was compiled by Teresa Wilkin from photos she took while visiting warmer climes. From 2014 to 2020, she celebrated her winter birthday by taking tours, mostly in Europe, of cultures where the period before Lent in the Christian calendar is celebrated by revelry and competitions. We in the USA call these festivals Mardi Gras, while the French refer to this season as Carnaval, from the Italian Carnevale, or “goodbye to meat.” Mardi Gras in 2023 falls on February 21st when she plans to be in French Polynesia checking out what Carnaval celebrations might look like there.
