In 1993, The Evergreen State College professor Stephanie Coontz shattered myths about family, sex, and marriage with her groundbreaking book, The Way We Never Were. In December 2024, as the latest installment of Lacey's History Talks! series, local historian Deborah Ross delved into newspaper articles, census data, and archives from early Thurston County to develop a picture of attitudes towards romance, marriage, and sexuality, that, surprisingly, aren't too different from today. Note: this talk will touch on issues of sexuality and sexual preferences. Thanks to the Lacey Historical Museum and the City of Lacey for sharing the video.
