On the 40th anniversary of the historic 1984 Women’s Olympic Trails. The first time women were allowed to compete in the Olympic Marathon, the Trials took place in Olympia on May 12, 1984. Sister Marion Irvine, a Dominican Nun & principal of the Sacred Heart School in San Francisco, was known as “The Flying Nun,” and at 54, she was the oldest finisher in the Trials by 12 years AND the oldest person to ever qualify & run in a U. S. Olympic Trials. Stephen Lane, author of “Long Run to Glory,” will share his newly-published book. The book, released late last year, chronicles the long and arduous journey of women earning the right to run in an Olympic Marathon. This presentation was in May 2024.
